We walked down to the Ishavshotel in downtown Tromsø for our Arctic Route bus (marked Lyngen 917) that would start our amazing day of fun rides and beautiful views. The bus leaves at 8:45, but we arrived at 8:30 to make sure we have enough time to locate the bus and have a stress free morning. We highly recommend doing the same since it can get very crowded. The ride took us from Tromsø through the beautiful valley of Breidvikeidet to the ferry in Breidvik (a 45-minute drive). After a short wait the ferry arrived and we boarded the ferry. The journey over to the other side took about 20 minutes, 20 minutes that we really enjoyed. The views from the ferry of the fjord and the Lyngen Alps were just spectacular. Once on the other side we were taken to a minivan and driven straight to the base camp, which was just a few minutes away. Just the drive to the base camp was an adventure by itself and already worth it!
And remember, don’t leave your driving license at home!
Our experienced instructors took care of us right after arrival and showed us into a cozy hut for the snowmobile safety introduction. Everything was made very clear to us and all our questions were answered. It was a first for many people to drive a snowmobile and you could see that the nervousness was replaced by excitement. After that you will go to finally get dressed up! You will be provided with a warm suit, boots, mittens and a helmet.
Little pro tip from us: bring a hat that fits under a helmet!
And then it was time, time to pick your snowmobile, sit down on it and start the machine. You will already feel a small rush of adrenalin once you start the roaring engine. The first couple minutes were for us to get used to the snowmobile, to get comfortable with the steering and the movement itself. Our instructors were very helpful, attentive and explained everything we needed to know. And then it was go time. Stunning views and fun riding!
We don’t want to spoil everything for you now by describing everything, but it was a blurry bliss of speed, power and untouched deep snow, all in the most Norwegian setting you can imagine.
After the 2 hours of riding through this unique and pure landscape, you will have the opportunity to warn up a bit with a really good soup (vegetarian option available) in the base camp before heading back to Tromsø. We can not imagine a better way of calming down than sitting next to a fire in a snowed in hut.
We believe this tour has everything that you want on a snowmobile tour. Beautiful and wild scenery, experienced guides with whom you feel safe, snowmobiles in top shape and a delicious soup at the end. What more could one ask for? We can only recommend this tour for an exciting day in the snow!
